Why did I Receive an X1 Error Message that my Index has been Wiped/Cleared?

X1 error message:

"An error was encountered while indexing.  Another program may be locking X1's files.  The database has been cleared and indexing has been stopped .  Restart it to try one more time.  If the problem recurs, try closing other programs until indexing is complete."

This error message can occur if X1 is unable to access one of its' index files (.DAT files). This can occur if an external program is accessing one of the .DAT files (X1 index files), such as a backup program, antivirus scanner, antispyware application or disk utility while X1 is attempting to access the file.

If this is the cause, you should exclude the X1 index folder from being scanned. The X1 index folder (.DAT files) is typically located here and should be excluded:

XP Users:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\X1 Desktop Search
(**If you do not see the Local Settings folder, then from Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)

Vista Users/Windows 7:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\X1 Desktop Search
(**If you do not see the AppData folder, then from Windows Explorer, press and hold the ALT key and click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)

For example, we've seen this error occur when running backup programs, or utilities such as Diskeeper, Folder Lock or GoBack or other installed search applications. Please make sure that no other application is manipulating the X1 index directory.
