I See a Big Gray "X" When I View Some PDF Files?

PDF files can not only be created, but they can also be OCR'd by any number of applications. Additionally, each OCR application has its' own variety of scan setting options. This makes PDF files different than nearly every other document format (i.e. MS Word, Excel, etc.) where you would typically use the specific application to create, modify and save the file.

While we do occasionally hear about indexing problems with PDF files, much more common is the case where X1 has properly indexed the file, but it will not hit highlight properly.

You should try creating a PDF using the OCR scan setting "text and pictures" and verify that you are not using the setting "Text over image", "Image over text" or "Page only". We believe that creating a single-layer PDF will produce the results you desire.
